A woman in Detroit is accused of torturing her blind 3-year-old son before murdering him and locking his body in a freezer.

Azuradee France, 31, is facing charges of felony murder, torture, first-degree child abuse, and concealing the death of an individual, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Sunday.

“The alleged facts in this case have astounded even the seriously jaded,” according to Worthy.

“Our children continue to be at risk, not just from gun violence but also from the alleged murderer that lives in the house with them.”

The Detroit Police Department responded to France’s residence Friday to perform a wellness check and were confronted with at least five children living in squalor and the body of a 3-year-old decomposing in a basement freezer, according to a report.

France acted strangely when she opened the door and was later taken into custody.

The cause of the toddler’s death was determined to be a homicide, authorities said.

An investigation into the death remains open.

“This case has shocked me, and shocked our investigators,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.

The dead child was identified as Chase Allen by his grandmother, Toni Haynes, who said she had called Child Protective Services on her daughter.

“I called CPS on her. A lot of us called, and they’d come out and give her kids right back to her.”

The state had made numerous visits to France’s home, and family members had confronted her, Haynes added.

She had no idea how long the decomposing body of her grandson had been locked in the basement freezer, she said.
