Legendary Charleston County coach and administrator Dave Spurlock passed away in his sleep overnight, Sports4's Scott Eisberg has learned. He was 69.
Spurlock's passing comes as a surprise, says Art Craig, who worked with the coach at Hanahan High School.
Spurlock began substituting at the school in January. Craig says he loved every second of it.
Just last week, Spurlock was coaching players during a 7-on-7 drill.
"He was grabbing kids from class and saying, 'I think we've got a kicker, we've got this, we've got that', but he was also making an impact on all of our kids in school," said Craig. "I guess I've been fortunate to be a head coach for so long and this is the first time I've ever lost anybody on my staff. You just kind of go numb. It's really been hard to believe, to tell you the truth."
In October, Scott Eisberg reunited with the previously retired coach after he had recently taken up an assistant coaching position at Hanahan High.
"I'm simply gutted right now. Stunned. Just got word that Dave Spurlock passed in his sleep last night. Literally just did this story with him a few months ago," Eisberg wrote on Twitter Monday afternoon.
Spurlock spent more than four decades with Charleston County School District before he retired in 2016, with 33 years spent on the sidelines and nine in administration. He coached football and baseball during the tenure of his lengthy career.
