PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — A police officer who was also running as a Republican candidate for state Senate is under investigation after accusations of assaulting a woman were made at a Roe v. Wade rally that took place outside the Rhode Island State House Friday evening, officials confirmed.
Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Paré told WJAR that the officer under investigation was identified as "Jeann Lugo," who has served on the force for three years.
The woman who accused Lugo of attacking her has also identified herself as "Jennifer Rourke," Lugo's Democratic opponent who is also running for state Senate in District 29.
Lugo told WJAR he is suspending his campaign.
Rhode Island State Police charged Lugo with simple assault and disorderly conduct after he turned himself in Saturday afternoon. He was released on personal recognizance and will be re-arraigned on July 8th at the 6th District Court in Providence.
In a police report, Rourke told officers Lugo struck her in the head three times during an altercation outside the State House.
"Last night, after speaking at our Roe rally, my Republican opponent – a police officer – violently attacked me. This is what it is to be a Black woman running for office. I won't give up," Rourke posted on Twitter Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Black Lives Matter Political Action Committee is calling for Lugo to step down from the police department.
"There is really no excuse regardless of how this investigation goes that results in anything other than him being fired," said Harrison Tuttle, the executive director of the political action committee.
The Providence police department released a statement Saturday morning saying the officer under investigation "was placed on administrative leave with pay this morning, pending a criminal investigation and administrative review."
Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza also weighed in on Twitter, saying, "Unfortunately, I am limited in what I can say publicly due to LEOBOR. With that said, I’ve seen the video and it’s immensely disturbing. Those responsible will be held fully accountable."
There were two additional arrests made at Friday evening’s demonstration.
Jessica Burton, 39, of Warwick, was arrested for disorderly conduct. Burton was transported to the State Police Lincoln Woods Barracks, processed, and held overnight.
Nicholas Morrell, 31, also of Warwick, was charged with disorderly conduct, possessing weapons other than firearms, and resisting arrest. He was also processed and held overnight.
State police say additional incidents from the demonstration are still under investigation.
