Grand Island sets fireworks ordinance ahead of July Fourth

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Grand Island is imposing a fireworks ordinance ahead of the Fourth of July.

On Saturday, fireworks may be set off from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Sunday, an extra hour is added, giving residents until 11 p.m., and July 4 allows for fireworks from 8 a.m. to midnight.

The city is reminding adults and kids of firework safety protocols, such as:

  • Young children should never light off fireworks, including sparklers.
  • Older children should only use fireworks under close adult supervision.
  • Fireworks should be lit off outside, away from trees, dry brush and houses.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby in case of emergency fireworks.
  • Malfunctioning fireworks should be soaked with water, then thrown away.
  • Ensure that people, pets and unused fireworks are a safe distance away before igniting fireworks.
  • Never experiment with homemade fireworks.
