Deputies discovered the body of Lloyd Trenton Stilwell at 190 Stone Drive in Max Meadows on June 23, according to police.
Authorities say Stilwell sustained a gunshot wound to the chest; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was found lying face down, and the body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for an autopsy.
No firearm was found in or near the vicinity of the victim, authorities say.
According to police, Kenneth Michael Sayers changed his initial story and said that he was present when Stilwell was shot and that he knew who shot him.
Sayers later admitted to killing Stilwell, police say.
Sayers was arrested and charged with murder and possession of ammunition after being convicted of a felony.
He is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail without Bond.
