Since 1776, July 4th—also known as Independence Day or the Fourth of July — has been celebrated as the birth of American independence. On July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies' separation from Great Britain.
The Fourth of July is usually celebrated with festivities such as fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.
Various cities and counties in Southwest Georgia are hosting 4th of July events to commemorate the special holiday.
Albany/Dougherty County
Enjoy activities, live music and tasty treats this July as the City of Albany hosts the 2022 Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks on Monday, July 4.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. at Veterans Park Amphitheatre off of Front Street in Downtown Albany.
Host, DJ Planet X will kick off the entertainment portion of the event at 5:30 p.m. Enjoy live performances from Larry Mallory, Riley Anderson and G&S Experience!
Fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m.
Camilla
The Independence Day Festival, Small Engine Parade and fireworks will take place over two days, Saturday, July 2 and Monday, July 4.
The entertainment will be in two locations: Colleen Morrell Park and the city parking lot on Scott Street.
There will be 14 groups/bands that will be appearing on the two stages starting at 5:30 p.m. and ending at 11 p.m.
Mama Rita's Mexican Kitchen and Knives will be open on both days and will be serving food and alcohol. If you would like to take an alcoholic drink out in the festival you may, once your ID is checked and a band put around your wrist. Drinks will be served in a special cup.
On Monday, July 4, at approximately 8:30 p.m. will be the small engine parade and at approximately 9:30 p.m. will be the fireworks display.
Organizers say to bring a lawn chair, claim a space and enjoy the event, sponsored by the City of Camilla.
Douglas / Coffee County
The City of Douglas, First National Bank of Coffee County, and other partners are hosting a 2022 Freedom Fest celebration on Monday, July 4, 2022, at JC Adams Municipal Park - Jardine Stadium.
Gates will open at 5 p.m.. Stadium seating will be provided, admission and parking are free. There will be music, food vendors, a kids carnival, and fireworks at dark.
Food vendors include Super Yum Hot Dogs, LA Twister Fun Cups, Kona-Ice, Tanner’s On the Go, Martha’s Kitchen, Taqueria Tamaulipas, and Bennett's Cool Treats.
Leesburg / Lee County
Philema Road Baptist Church is inviting everyone to celebrate 4th of July.
There will be free food, army trucks, bouncy houses, a classic car show and fireworks to top off the night.
The event starts at 6 p.m.
Organizers ask that attendees bring lawn chairs.
Colquitt/ Miller County
On July 2 from 4-8 p.m., the City of Colquitt and Miller County will be hosting Colquitt's Freedom Fest. The fest will be held on the Historic Downtown Square.
There will be vendors, waterslides, inflatables, food and entertainment.
There will be a special performance by Kevin Whoo until 8 p.m. Fireworks after dark will be held at Spring Creek Park.
Edison
The City of Edison will have fireworks on Monday, July 4 at 8 p.m. at the horse show grounds.
Hamburgers, hotdogs, candy apples and more will be available.
Tifton / Tift County
On July 1 from 6-10 p.m., the City of Tifton, Tift County and the Downtown Development Authority will be hosting Rock the Block, downtown.
Fireworks will be shot from the rec fields on 2nd street. Please note that parking is not permitted on Victory or Baldwin drives, or at Leroy Rogers Senior Center.
There will be food and drinks, water slides and games and a car cruise in.
To celebrate 150 years of Tifton, there will also be a birthday cake.
Live music will be performed by the Emerald Empire Band and the Page Brothers Band.
Sylvester / Worth County
On July 1, the City of Sylvester and Worth County will be having a Fireworks & Fun celebration. The event will be at the Woolard Center on 709 W. Wallace Street.
You can bring your own chair or rent a round table with eight chairs for $40. Tables must be paid for by Thursday, June 30.
At 7 P.M., the public is invited to enjoy a concert featuring Stephen Harrell & The Dusty Boots Band. In addition, there will also be food trucks on site.
Fireworks will start at 9:15 P.M.
Enigma
The City of Enigma will be having a 4th of July Celebration at the Enigma Park. Admission is $3 per person. Admission is free for kids 10 and under.
Gates will open at 11 AM. There will be multiple food trucks, vendors, and activities. The family can enjoy a dunking booth, watermelon eating contest, grease pole climbing, water slides, and a mechanical bull ride.
Homerville
The City of Homerville welcomes the public to its annual 4th of July Celebration. The event will take place at the Homerville/Clinch County Recreation Department.
Waterslides and kids events will be from 1- 5 P.M.
The Danny Dawson Band will take the stage from 7-9 P.M.
The fireworks show starts at 9 P.M.
