Sheldon, IA (KICD) — A collision with a trailer hauling hay bales led to minor injuries for three people near Sheldon Friday night.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, 23 year old Drew Haack of Hospers, IA was hauling a loaded hay rack East on Highway 18 on a trailer without any lights or reflective equipment required for slow moving vehicles. The bales also reportedly were wide enough to obscure the truck’s tail lights as well, and Haack was partially driving on the shoulder of the road, creating a dust cloud.

A Chevy Impala driven by 21 year old Issac Visser of Sanborn, IA was also travelling East and approached the trailer but due being an unlit part of the highway at night and no visible lights from Haack’s truck, Visser only saw a dust cloud. Visser did not slow down for the cloud and struck the trailer at 55 mph.

One of Visser’s passengers, 21 year old Kaley Mazur of Sanborn, was on the lap of the other passenger, 18 year old Madalyn Lorenz of Everly, and not wearing a seat belt. All three only reportedly received minor injuries. They were transported to Sheldon Hospital via Sheldon Ambulance for treatment and Haack was not injured.

Haack was cited for Improper Rear Lamps and Failure to Display a Reflective Device On a Slow Vehicle and Visser was cited for Following to Close.
