Tax rate lowered 10 cents over two years
County commissioners held a regular meeting on Monday, yet with some very important news. The proposed tax rate for Hopkins County has now been lowered. County Judge Robert Newsom opened the discussion by stating, “we’re lowering the tax rate this year — that’s the good news out of this meeting.” Tax Assessor Debbie Mitchell first presented the voter approved tax rate at .523981. “We are asking that the proposed rate be .5239 which is lower than the voter approval rate — this brings the tax rate down from 58 to 52,” stated Mitchell. Last year the tax rate was lowered four cents, making the overall tax reduction for the last two years 10 cents. “We had an increase in values the last two years,” stated Mitchell, “and an increase in our sales tax which has helped to lower our property taxes.” County Auditor Shannah Aulsbrook stated, “there are towns around us that are going up, so it’s huge that we have a decrease like this.” On Aug. 22 at 9 a.m. the court will hold a public hearing for the proposed tax rate during their next meeting. The proposed tax rate was approved by commissioners.
