Following the ruling by the Supreme Court on Friday, essentially overturning Roe versus Wade, the Catholic Diocese of Peoria has responded to the news.

Bishop Louis Tylka says the Church has proclaimed the sanctity of human life, “from conception until natural death,” and that Catholics must continue to be a voice that defends life in all stages from threats.

He said that, as the Bishop of the Peoria Diocese, he calls on people of goodwill to support the efforts to uphold the dignity of human life and provide materials, emotional, and spiritual support to families and to women with unplanned pregnancies and to offer support and care for children.

“As Catholics and as Americans, we must continue to be a voice that defends life – in all its stages and from all its threats – so that we can truly build a culture of life in our country and in the world.”

The 6-3 decision by the nation’s highest court overturned 50 years of precedent that federally legalized abortion, now giving the states the right to restrict access to the procedure or even make it illegal.

Tylka adds that Friday’s decision will not be the last word on the matter but says it is a significant moment in the efforts to work towards greater respect for life.
