ANN ARBOR, MI -- The former location of Chela’s Restaurant and Taqueria is about to see a new concept from a Detroit-based chef.

Brad Greenhill, owner and chef of Detroit’s Takoi, will be bringing a Mediterranean concept to 307 S. Fifth Avenue in the coming months. The restaurant — which currently has the working name Spiedo, the Italian word for a roasting spit — will feature a variety of rotisserie meats and vegetables.

Greenhill operated a pop-up restaurant in Ann Arbor in 2015 before taking the concept to Detroit. He plans to continue both concepts.

“I’m pretty excited about it,” Greenhill said. “People in Ann Arbor have been wanting us to come back for a while.”

Spiedo will be influenced by Italian and Mediterranean flavors, with touches of the Thai cuisine Greenhill currently features at Takoi.

“Once you go fish sauce, you don’t ever really come back from that,” he said.

Although an exact menu has not yet been released, the restaurant will feature rotisserie meats and vegetables, griddled breads, shakes and a variety of canned cocktails. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options will also be available. Entrees will cost around $12 or $13, while sides will be around $6 to $8.

“The idea is you can get a meal under $20,” Greenhill said.

The restaurant will have space for 30 people indoors, as well as feature an outdoor patio. Greenhill is still locking in hours, but says he expects to be open from 11 a.m. to either 8 or 9 p.m. five days per week.

While the concept will most likely not be fully open until the fall, Greenhill said he plans on introducing pop-ups in the space in August.

“Hopefully, it will just sort of evolve into a full-time, functioning restaurant once the rest of the equipment gets in,” Greenhill said. “…We’re excited to come to Ann Arbor and serve some food and see some familiar faces.”
