She said he knows something is off since he didn't return to his home that was destroyed in the fire, but otherwise, he's acting like a normal toddler.

WISN 12 News reporter Hannah Hilyard chatted with Noelle Guy and M.J. over Zoom this morning after his first night out of the hospital.

He had been there the past week recovering from injuries suffered during a house fire.

First responders busted their way into his room and handed him through a window to safety. Guy said he doesn't know much of what happened and has shifted his focus to toys — lots of them.

"M.J. is the most energetic loving kid you could ever meet. He may be shy at first, but he'll warm up to you," Guy said.

"And to see him being a 3-year-old right now, what does that mean to you?" Hilyard asked.

"It's absolutely amazing that he's functioning as his normal self before this whole situation happened," Guy said.

Guy and M.J. are staying with family while they get back on their feet.

Guy's mother, who was also home at the time of the fire, is still in the hospital in a coma.

She suffered third-degree burns, and her family said she is also on a ventilator fighting COVID-19.
