Longview Arboretum adds hundreds of signs to identify plants
LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - If you’ve been to the Longview Arboretum and spotted a plant you just had to have for your yard, it could be a challenge finding out what it’s called.
Help is on the way. Longview Arboretum Director Steven Chamblee, and other employees, are posting signs to indicate just what type of plant that is. The plant identification labels have the common name, a regional name, as well as the botanical name. There is also a QR code that will pull up a website with information on the plant. But the 348 signs aren’t enough to cover all the plants at the arboretum.
“I’d say we probably have over 600 species of ornamental plants in there. Now as far as weeds and wildflowers and all that other stuff, the number just takes off radically. But we’re talking about cultivated plants here,” Chamblee said.
The signs are about $25 each and the arboretum received several donations to pay for them.
