HARTFORD, Conn. — The state’s minimum wage will increase by $1 from $13 to 14 per hour on Friday.

The increase is part of legislation signed into law in 2019 that gradually raises the state’s minimum wage by $1 per hour over a five-year period. The last time there was an increase was on August 1, 2021.

When Gov. Ned Lamont signed Public Act 19-4, which requires the minimum wage to increase five times over a five-year period, the rate was $10.10 per hour. The final increase is set to take place on June 1, 2023. The rate will go from $14 to $15 per hour.

“For too long, while the nation’s economy grew, the income of the lowest-earning workers has stayed flat, making already existing pay disparities even worse and preventing hardworking families from obtaining financial security,” Lamont said in a statement Monday. “This is a fair, gradual increase for workers who will invest the money right back into our economy and continue supporting local businesses in their communities.”

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2024, Public Act 19-4 will require the minimum wage to become indexed to the employment cost index, which is calculated by the U.S. Department of Labor. For the first time in Connecticut, the rate will grow according to economic indicators.
