(KWNO)- With July 4th approaching, the National Wildlife Refuge System is reminding all that fireworks are prohibited on the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.

The National Wildlife and Fish refuge say that the bright and abrupt lights and sounds are often seen as a threat to animals in the refuge, specifically Eagles and Blue Heron. In some instances scaring the animals to the point of leaving their nest, leaving the young vulnerable to predators as well as straying away from their habitat and into danger (ie. roadways, flying into buildings, etc). Not to mention the litter left behind from fireworks can be choking hazards for wildlife and may be toxic if ingested.

Federal law enforcement officers will be patrolling the refuge looking for fireworks, as well as glass bottles, which are also banned. It’s a $175 fine for having glass bottles and a $225 fine for possessing and using fireworks.

The refuge includes most islands and beaches on the river from Wabasha, MN to Rock Island, IL.

If you’re unaware of what is included in the refuge contact the Winona, MN office at 507-454-7351 or go online to www.fws.gov/refuge/upper_mississippi_river.
