Waiting on Brisker, Camp Countdown, Fields’ Endless Workout Campaign, and Other Bears Bullets

My road trip playlist creation skills are rusty, in part because I haven’t been hitting the road as often as I’d like. Maybe I should shake things up a little. But when I do, the tunes need to be hitting. Otherwise, it just won’t be the same.

  • If Justin Fields falls short of the lofty expectations that come with being a first-round quarterback, it won’t be for a lack of effort. Another day, another round of workout vids starring QB1:

  • On the one hand, it is commendable to see Fields working out with such fervor. Raw talent can take you only so far in this league. Fields definitely has talent in spades, and a remarkable work ethic to boot. But when the rubber hits the road, it will come down to Fields reading defenses, reacting properly, and executing within the confines of the game. And there simply aren’t any workouts to simulate that. Nevertheless, I tip my cap to Fields and find myself feeling encouraged that he continues to put in offseason work. This wasn’t an offseason to take it lightly for Fields (or anyone else on the Bears, for that matter).

  • Mark Grote is one of a kind, so I’m looking forward to giving this a listen:

  • An interesting tidbit from Grote came up after the Bears announced Kyler Gordon signed his rookie contract:

  • Gordon’s absence at minicamp practices was a bit irksome, but not problematic. It’s not as if Gordon wasn’t at camp at all. It’s just that he wasn’t participating in many (if any) practices. There were a few snippets of Gordon participating in drills, which were shared by the team’s social media channels. But there simply wasn’t a large sample of practice snaps for Gordon this spring. At least there aren’t injury concerns at this time, which makes me think Gordon sitting out had to do with him not having signed his rookie contract. No harm, no foul. Right?

  • Spin zone: Gordon sitting out gave practice opportunities for players the new-look Bears front office and coaching staff need longer looks at before the roster trims to 53. With Gordon on the sideline, the likes of Duke Shelley, Thomas Graham Jr., Kindle Vildor, Allie Green IV, Lamar Jackson, BoPete Keyes, Michael Joseph, and others were given a chance to strut their stuff. Assuming Gordon is locked into a starter’s role, that collection of reserves had ample opportunity this spring and early summer to make waves and strong impressions going into the break period we’re currently in. Those opportunities might not be there when training camp kicks off a month from now with a fully healthy Gordon rolling at Halas Hall.

  • If Gordon hits the ground running at training camp, this won’t be on our minds for too long. Remember how long we were dwelling on Roquan Smith missing most of the summer during his holdout from signing his rookie contract? It wasn’t that long. And Smith has surely made up with it with his play on the field. Ideally, history repeats itself with Gordon.

  • Heads up: Safety Jaquan Brisker – the Bears’ other second-round pick – is the team’s only draft pick who remains unsigned. But I imagine that is coming sooner rather than later.

  • A reminder of what Brisker brings to the table:

  • Only 76 days until the Bears kick off their regular season at Soldier Field. In the meantime, this is the closest we’ll get to guys wearing Bears helmets along the lakefront:
