Police investigating deadly shooting at Birch Bark Place in Chicopee

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Chicopee Police arrested a 47-year-old man after a deadly shooting Saturday afternoon.

According to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office Spokesperson Jim Leydon, on Saturday at around 3:56 p.m., the Chicopee Police Department was called to Chicopee Street for a report of shots fired. When they arrived, officers found a man who looked to be suffering from a gunshot wound.

Emergency medical procedures were given until the man was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he was later declared dead. The man has been identified as Mr. Anderson Martinez, 42, of Holyoke

Officers found Angel Guzman, 47, of Chicopee, in front of a nearby apartment complex with a semi-automatic handgun. Guzman, who is partially confined to a wheelchair, complied with police in giving them the gun and was taken to the Chicopee Police Department.

It appears both men were in an argument, and both men brandished a weapon before shots were fired. 

The investigation is being conducted by the Chicopee Police Department along with the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden DA’s Office.
