SPRINGFIELD — A gallon of gas averages $4.81 in Greater Springfield, according to AAA Northeast’s weekly survey.

That’s down from $4.92 a week ago but still up from $4.62 a month ago.

Massachusetts’s average gas price is down 7 cents from last week ($5), averaging $4.93 a gallon. The Massachusetts price is 20 cents higher than a month ago when it was $4.73 and $1.95 higher than June 27, 2021 when it was $2.98.

Massachusetts’s average gas price is 4 cents higher than the national average.

Oil prices dropped to $107 per barrel, down from $110 last week on fears of a global recession.

“Fear is not a good reason to move a market like the one for oil, but it is a powerful motivator,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and government affairs. “The cost of oil accounts for nearly $3 for every $4.89 at the gas pump. Consumers should find more relief when fueling up if oil prices drop further.”

The price changes come in the runup to the July 4 weekend.

AAA expects July 4 weekend travel nationwide to jump 3.7% compared with a year ago with 47.9 million people traveling 50 miles or more between June 30 and July 4.

That number includes 1.37 million Massachusetts residents.

The 2022 estimates are still lower than pre-pandemic times. AAA said 49 million people traveled on July 4 weekend 2019.

Car travel is expected to set a new record despite high gas prices with 42 million people hitting the road.

Locally, Hampden County has the lowest average gas price in the state at $4.80. It is $4.85 in Hampshire county and $4.86 in Franklin County.

Neighboring Hartford County in Connecticut averages $4.82 a gallon even with Connecticut’s suspension of its 25-cent-a-gallon gas tax .
