A highly anticipated Jersey Mike’s Subs location officially opened Wednesday morning next to a recently opened Starbucks.

The restaurant at 2825 Freeport Road Suite B in Harmar is one of the chain’s 22 locations in the Pittsburgh area.

Area director Bill Farley said the building was not on the restaurant’s radar until he drove by it with a manager. The process of getting to the grand opening took a year, Farley said.

“When we heard a Starbucks was opening in the building, we felt it was a natural fit,” he said.

To celebrate the opening, the restaurant ran a promotion with the New Jersey-based nonprofit Where Angels Play Foundation. The nonprofit builds playgrounds in areas that have faced tragedies.

The nonprofit set up a tent outside the establishment, and members handed out cards through Sunday offering a free sub when a customer donated $3 to Where Angels Play.

Jersey Mike’s has been instrumental in helping the nonprofit fulfill its mission, volunteer Kathy Lavin said.

“They not only make great sandwiches. They are very philanthropic,” she said.

The menu offers various sandwiches, subs, cheesesteaks, chips and more. Farley said everything is sliced and baked fresh for customers.

“We don’t want to just give customers a great sandwich, but a great experience,” Farley said.

Customers were happy to have a location closer to them. The next nearest Jersey Mike’s is in Blawnox.

Jennifer Conocchia of Natrona Heights said she had always wanted to try the place, but there was never one nearby.

“This is something new and different,” she said. “It’s good to see variety.”

Harmar resident Evan Merhaut said he went to Jersey Mike’s a lot in Gibsonia and was happy he could go to a closer one.

“The subs are just awesome. They are good and authentic,” he said.
