A major crash and vehicle fire has closed Interstate 84 in both directions from Troutdale to Hood River.
TripCheck reported the crash happened about 7 a.m. Monday near Bonneville Dam at milepost 40. The Oregon Department of Transportation said the crash included a semi hauling a crane boom and a flatbed trailer that crashed into the median barrier and spilled an estimated 200 gallons of fuel, oil and antifreeze. The pavement was also gouged in places and will need to be repaired before the highway can reopen. The closure has extended into the afternoon.
Travelers between the two exits will be held until the crash clears. Alternate routes include SR 14 on the Washington side of the Columbia River, although that route may include slowing near Stevenson for paving, and U.S. 26 over Mount Hood.
Large commercial vehicles should use the U.S. 26 detour route.
