A 21-year-old man died from an apparent suicide at the Milwaukee County Jail on Sunday.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said the man had been in custody for less than three hours when his attempt was discovered.

He was identified Tuesday as Brieon Green of Milwaukee by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office.

The man was arrested by deputies shortly after 4:30 p.m. at Bradford Beach, which is patrolled by the sheriff’s office, under suspicion of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and carrying a concealed weapon, according to a news release.

The man passed medical and other standard screenings at the jail and was placed into a holding cell at 6:18 p.m., the release said. During a standard check of cells that occurs every 30 minutes, the man was discovered after his attempt at 7:21 p.m.

Medical personnel were called , but the man was pronounced dead shortly after, the release said. The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department is the independent agency investigating the incident.

The Milwaukee County Jail was the scene of four in-custody deaths between January 2020 and April 2021. The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office cleared jail staff of criminal wrongdoing in each case, but it is unclear if any staff were disciplined internally.

Three of those cases were investigated as suicides, and the cause of the death for the fourth was determined to be acute heart failure, according to reports from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office.
