MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. -- A lifeguard rescued a man and dog in distress Sunday evening at Miramar Beach.
The South Walton Fire District was called around 6:45 p.m. to the area of Snowdrift Road. Reports were that "a person and a dog were near the second sandbar and struggling to make it back to shore."
SWFD's Surf 5 arrived on scene, encountering multiple other swimmers with floatation attempting to rescue the victims.
"The lifeguard immediately entered the water on a rescue board and checked with each swimmer in succession, who all verbally confirmed they were doing well but gravely concerned about the two victims," South Walton Fire District says in a release. "Surf 5 continued paddling until reaching the adult male and the dog, then quickly secured the person and dog on the rescue board, before successfully coming back to shore."
SWFD's Tower 54 Lifeguard and a Walton County Sheriff's Office deputy also assisted.
"It was confirmed that the adult male was not the dog’s owner, however, was attempting to rescue the dog, which had swam too far from shore," the release states. "Both of them had ended up in distress and needing the help of lifeguards. Thankfully, no one required transport to the hospital."
