Man arrested after forging $4K check from elderly man’s bank account

BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) — A man is behind bars after processing a fraudulent transaction from a bank account of an 88-year-old man.

On June 29, the 88-year-old victim noticed transactions made from his account that he did not authorize. The victim drove to the Hancock Whitney Bank on Plank Road and learned that 38-year-old Elgin Jamar Franklin, gave the bank teller for $4,000 made payable to himself from the victim’s account.

The victim told the teller that he did not sign the check.

The bank provided officials with evidence to prove that Franklin cashed a checked and forged the victim’s signature with the intent to take advantage of the victim, who no longer hears and cannot write and sign a check to someone.

Franklin was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and charged with one count of exploitation of the infirmed, one count of monetary instrument abuse, one count of theft $1k but less than $5k, and one count of forgery.

His bond is set at $7,000.
