Man, woman dead in early morning shooting in Russell neighborhood
A man and woman have died in a shooting in the Russell neighborhood, according to Louisville Metro police.
Around 4:30 a.m. on Monday morning, Louisville Metro Police Department First Division officers responded to a report of gunshots in the 2400 block of West Madison Street near 24th Street. That is between Muhammad Ali Boulevard and West Broadway.
When police got to the scene, they found 42-year-old Dashawn Powell and 41-year-old Ebony Shepard shot multiple times inside a car.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Powell is the brother of Katina Powell, who was at the center of the sex scandal involving the UofL men's basketball program.
"We're losing people every day, and they're getting younger and younger... and it's getting closer and closer," Katina Powell told WLKY. "It's not cool anymore. Like not just because of my family, because of a lot of families, everybody. I mean... my little brother was just one of the many, but for everybody — like people don't deserve this."
Katina Powell says she heard from her brother Sunday night and says he was seeking treatment for substance abuse. What led up to the double-murder remains unknown.
A neighbor said he heard the deadly shots, and the violence has him considering a move.
"I've only lived here for 30 days, and probably I won't live here much longer because it's just too much for me," the neighbor said. "It's just, I'm used to living in the country."
The LMPD Homicide Unit is handling the investigation which remains ongoing.
