HYDE PARK — Officials in Hyde Park are asking residents to be on the lookout after a mountain lion was recently reported within the community.

The city posted on social media that a mountain lion cub had an altercation with a dog on Saturday. No injuries were reported.

City officials asked citizens to keep a close eye on their children and pets. If anyone spots the cub, they should contact animal control.

The Utah Division of Natural Resources report that mountain lions live all across the state. They are easily recognized by their tawny color, white muzzle and long tail. Their primary source of food is deer, so they will be found wherever deer are.

Utah DNR said you should do the following if you encounter an aggressive mountain lion:

  • Do not run. Running will provoke an instinctive prey response and the mountain lion may pursue you.
  • Make yourself look intimidating. Make eye contact, which mountain lions consider a threat. Make yourself look big by opening your jacket, raising your arms and waving them. Speak loud and firm to the mountain lion.
  • If you have children, pick them up before they panic and run. When you are picking children up, keep eye contact with the mountain lion and try not to bend over too far or turn your back on the animal.
  • If you are attacked, fight back! Protect your head and neck, as the neck is the target for the mountain lion. If the animal thinks it is not likely to win its fight with you quickly, it will probably give up and leave.
