GOULDSBORO, Maine — A cottage near Prospect Harbor Lighthouse caught fire Monday morning.
The combined effort of about 12 area fire departments saved the building from being completely destroyed.
Gouldsboro Fire Cheif Todd Daley told NEWS CENTER Maine the call came in around 5:15 a.m.
"There was a family of four in the building this morning, and they all got out ok," Gouldsboro Fire Chief Todd Daley said. "We had the fire out in the first hour, but then the wind changed off the water and started the fire right back up."
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Tuesday that the fire was determined to be accidental. It started in a ventilation fan located in the ceiling of a bathroom, according to Moss.
Daley said with help from Gouldsboro, Winter Harbor, Steuben, Sorrento, Sullivan, Franklin, Hancock, Cherryfield, Lamoine, Trenton, Blue Hill, and Milbridge firefighters, they were able to mostly extinguish the fire by 10 a.m.
The two-story building called Gull Cottage sits on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Satellite Operations Center on Lighthouse Point on Prospect Harbor's eastern shore.
"The building is used for any retired or current military staff that want to use it as a rental," Daley added.
