“I got to start braking, and I’ve got a guy about 30 feet behind me that’s coming up on my bumper and a car behind him,” Allen says.

Drivers now must turn from the left traffic lane on Orange Blossom Trail, also known as U.S. Highway 441, onto Yothers Road.

Slowing down in the left lane of the highway makes drivers susceptible to getting rear-ended by other drivers who want to keep traveling south.

“I stay on my rearview mirror, and if it looks like someone isn’t paying attention and they’re still coming hard on me, then I’ll drive on farther,” Allen says.

The Florida Department of Transportation is already looking into the problem.

The state is currently working on a segment of Orange Blossom Trail from the State Road 429 Connector Road to Jones Avenue. As a part of the project, a left-turn lane from southbound Orange Blossom Trail onto Yothers Road will be included.

That’s good news for Allen.

Smoothing out his commute means a little less pressure when he’s on the road, coming home from his latest job.

“It’s not just my safety, it’s everybody’s safety,” he says.
