Florida judge to hear challenge to new abortion law today

Leon County judge to hear request for a temporary injunction to block HB 5 from taking effect July 1.

Jacksonville, Fl — The Supreme Court’s landmark decision to overturn Roe v Wade is triggering a flurry of action throughout the country - and in Florida.

A judge in Leon County today is set to hear arguments in a request for a temporary injunction to block a state law that takes effect Friday, banning most abortions after 15 weeks.

Governor DeSantis, who signed the law in April, says Florida will continue to defend its pro-life reforms against state court challenges.

A report by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration shows that 79,000 people have gotten abortions in the last year. Both Planned Parenthood and the Florida Access Network said they’ve seen more out-of-state appointments in recent year.

“It’s a tragedy of epic proportions”, Andrew Shirvell with Florida Voice for the Unborn told WFTV. Shirvell has been lobbying to abolish abortion and looks forward to the possibilities of further restrictions now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned.
