DETROIT (WWJ) -- After some late-night drag racing in Detroit got broken up by the cops, two people were killed when their vehicle was struck by an Amtrak train.

At around 12:30 a.m. in Southwest Detroit, Police Chief James White said to arrival of officers on the scene put a stop to some drifting and drag racing -- sending vehicles fleeing in several directions.

One of the vehicles involved was a Lincoln MKZ, which White said continued speeding off and attempted to outrun the train coming from Chicago, on Dix and Central -- but they didn't make it.

"We were not chasing," said White.

According to authorities, when the car was hit, it was sent rolling over and burst into flames.

The two people in the car, a woman from Novi and a man from Wixom, were pronounced dead on the scene.

Amtrak says the train lost power from the crash but the 102 passengers and crew on board were not injured. The train was delayed for about three hours until the scene was cleared.

Detroit police are continuing to investigate this incident.

The names and ages of the people who died were not immediately released.
