A Catholic church in Reston was targeted Sunday and police are investigating for arson and graffiti following the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to a call at about 6:45 a.m. Sunday morning and found smoldering mulch at the St. John Neumann Catholic Community Church.
Firefighters detected an accelerant that was likely used for the fire at the church at 11900 Lawyers Road.
Graffiti was found on a sign at the entrance of the church and three other places on the back of the building. Words reading "THIS WONT STOP" were marked at the entrance sign at the church.
The spray-painted graffiti was related to the Supreme Court ruling, according to a release from Fairfax County Police.
“We continue to have increased patrols at places of worship, connect with community faith leaders, and are working with our regional law enforcement partners to determine who is responsible,” Fairfax Police said in the release.
Surveillance video from the church is under review.
