Tourists from Canada boost business at Hampton Beach
The U.S.-Canadian border is back open after being closed for the past couple of years due to COVID-19 concerns and businesses and New Hampshire are thrilled to welcome back tourists.
State officials said New Hampshire has been setting tourism records every year since 2020.
Last month, New Hampshire Department of Business and Economic Affairs Commissioner Taylor Caswell said the Granite State is expecting 4.6 million visitors this tourism season.
At Hampton Beach, business owners said they're already seeing an influx of tourists from Canada now that the border is back open.
"We've definitely seen a lot more Canadian tourists – I really enjoy it because I get to practice my French with them,” said Colby Petalas, server at Sea Ketch.
“What's nice about it is they like to have longer vacations so instead of coming for one or two nights, they usually end up coming for a week or two,” business owner Chuck Rage said.
Elizabeth Clark is visiting for the weekend from Vermont. Her children live in Canada, so she said the reopening of the border is like a homecoming.
"I think that's a wonderful thing because it means they get to come home for the first time in almost three years," Clark said.
Business owners said Canadian visitors are always welcome to New Hampshire and that they're expecting a busy next few months.
