Retired Greenville County educator Pearlie Harris has been honored countless times in the community, and now she's being honored in a book by Oprah Winfrey."Lift Every Voice" is a collection of powerful interviews with the oldest generation of Black Americans about their lives, their experience and wisdom - conducted by young Black journalists. Pearlie Harris sat down with WYFF News 4 Today's Destiny Chance for a Black History Month piece that first aired on WYFF News 4, last year.It's now printed and published in "Lift Every Voice," highlighting Miss Pearlie's career in Greenville County, and some of the issues she faced. She talked to Destiny Chance about what it was like teaching before, during and after desegregation, and her own students and their parents calling her the 'n-word.'"Lift Every Voice" also highlights the Bon Secours Pearlie Harris Center for breast health… and the mural outside of the canvas tower in her honor.
