Independence Day celebratory fireworks will soon be going off around Vermont, and Vermonters may not need to go far to see the colorful displays.

Many consumer fireworks are illegal in Vermont. The state Division of Fire Safety lists lists all those not allowed: “bottle rockets, Roman candles, rockets with sticks, mines and shells, helicopter-type rockets, missile-type rockets, revolving wheels, fountains and firecrackers."

In leu of such fireworks, city- and town-run events are plentiful. Here is when and where to catch fireworks, parades and more in Chittenden County.

Burlington

Burlington's annual Independence Day celebration will light up the sky over Lake Champlain. There will be live music, food vendors and more near the waterfront. The event's website asks that people leave pets at home during the event, because of the noise and pedestrian traffic.

When: Sunday, July 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Where: Waterfront Park; 20 Lake St., Burlington.
