Jackson residents stock up as boil-water notice continues

CITY IS TRYING TO PROVIDE RELIEF FOR THE ENTIRE WEEKEND RESIDENTS HAD TO BOIL WATER ANY TIME THEY NEED TO CONSUME IT. MAKING NORMAL EVERYDAY TASKS INCONVENIENT AND IT LOOKS LIKE THAT WILL CONTINUE INTO THE WEEK. <YOLANDA BRACEY: "I HAVE TO BOIL WATER BEFORE I COOK IT, BEFORE I COOK ANYTHING. I HAVE TO BOIL WATER BEFORE I BRUSH MY TEETH. USING THE BATHROOM, I STILL HAVE TO USE JUGS OF WATER JUST TO FLUSH AND IT GOES DOWN SLOW."> THE SYKES PARK COMMUNITY CENTER IS HOPING TO EASE THE STRAIN OF THIS NOTICE BY OPENING UP SUNDAY AND PROVIDING WATER FROM THIS WATER BOX THAT PRODUCES CLEAN FILTERED DRINKING FOR ALL RESIDENTS. <RUKIA LUMUMBA: "WHETHER IT'S A WATER CRISIS OR NOT OR WHETHER IT'S AN EMERGENCY, YOU KNOW THIS WATER BOX IS HERE. RESIDENT SHOULD NOT FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE TO GO TO THE STORE AND PURCHASE WATER, YOU CAN COME AND ACTUALLY FILL UP FOR FREE AND GET, GOOD QUALITY WATER."> JUGS ARE AVAILABLE BUT THE CITY RECOMMENDS YOU BRING YOUR OWN IF YOU HAVE THEM. OFFICIALS SAY THIS CITYWIDE BOIL WATER NOTICE IS CAUSED BY A WATER PRESSURE ISSUE AT THE O.B. CURTIS WATER PLANT. DUE TO THE COMBINATION OF ISSUES WITH THE FILTRATION EQUIPMENT AND HIGH DEMAND FOR WATER AS TEMPERATURES ARE STAYING VERY HOT. ONE RESIDENT SAYS SHE AND HER FAMILY ARE STRUGGLING TO DEAL WITH NOT HAVING CLEAN WATER. <YOLANDA BRACEY: "SOMEONE HAS TO STEP IN, BECAUSE IT BE SENIOR CITIZEN'S WATER PRESSURE BE OFF, AND SOMETIMES THEY DON'T HAVE WATER. WE DON'T HAVE WATER, WHEN OUR BILLS BE PAID. IF WE HAVE TO PAY OUR BILLS, THEY SHOULD MAKE SURE OUR WATER IS COMPLETELY OKAY TO USE."> THE COMMUNITY CENTER IS OPEN MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY FROM 9 IN THE MORNING UNTIL 4 IN THE AFTERNOON. JACKSON HOPING DOING THIS HELPS EASE THE STRAIN OF THE CURRENT WATER CRISIS. <STANLEY WESLEY: "THIS IS A SAFE HAVEN FOR THE CITIZENS WHENEVER WE DO HAVE A CRISIS, THEY'RE MORE THAN WELCOME TO COME HERE AND GET WATER."> ORIGINALLY THE CITY TOLD US WATER IS ALSO AVAILABLE AT ANY FIRE STATION... BUT WHEN WE CALLED THE OPEN STATIONS...ONLY ONE WE WAS AWARE OF THIS. WE ARE STILL TRYING TO CONFIRM WITH THE CITY WHICH FIRE STATIONS ARE GIVING OUT WATER. Jackson residents have been under a Boil Water notice since Friday. "I have to boil water before I cook it before I cook anything. I have to boil water before I brush my teeth. Using the bathroom, I still have to use jugs of water just to flush and it goes down slow," said Yolanda Bracey.The Sykes Park Community Center hopes to ease the strain of this notice by opening Sunday and providing water from this water box that produces clean filtered drinking water for residents."Whether it's a water crisis or not or whether it's an emergency, you know this water box is here. Residents should not feel like they have to go to the store and purchase water, you can come and actually fill up for free and get good quality water," said Rukia Lumumba. Jugs are available but the city recommends you bring your own if you have them. One resident says she and her family are struggling to deal with not having clean water."Someone has to step in because it be senior citizen's water pressure be off, and sometimes they don't have water. We don't have water, when our bills be paid. If we have to pay our bills, they should make sure our water is completely okay to use," said Bracey:The community center is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.For more information, customers may call 601-960-2723 during business hours or 601-960-1778 (or 601-960-1875) after 4 p.m. and on weekends.The distribution is in partnership with Mississippi Rapid Response Coalition and Mississippi Poor People’s Campaign.
