VILAS COUNTY, Wis. (WJFW)-  On Sunday, a golf event was held at Trout Lake Golf Club.

For most, it was a fun way to spend an afternoon.

But for one family, it was a way to prove that something positive can still prevail from a tragedy.

Golf, a fun sport for everyone to play. But for one family, it means so much more.

"We've been playing golf with the kids their whole lives, and they've all taken it up," said Pam Scheible.

Pam and Steve, the parents of Jacob Scheible, who took his own life two years ago, created the Jacob A Scheible Memorial Golf Outing in memory of their lost son.

"Because when we lost him, we wanted to make something good out of something we felt was tragic," Steve Scheible.

Jacob found happiness in golf, so much that he became a golf instructor, and he fell in love with the sport.

"For Jacob, it was a true passion. I mean, he lived for golf," said Pam Scheible.

So when his parents wanted to create something to honor his memory, they knew exactly what he would have wanted.

"He excelled and loved the game of golf, what it stood for, the discipline, the pride that it takes, and he loved teaching other to help them get better at their sport," said Steve Scheible.

The Scheible's held their inagural event last year, and it went so well that they decided to make it a yearly thing.

"This will be an annual, and right now we don't know how many years we intend to run it, but as long as the support is there," said Steve Scheible.

They have received support from people all over the Northwoods and other parts of the country, and they couldn't be more grateful.

"We are overwhelmed at the support that we've received from everyone," said Steve Scheible.

"From the Lakeland community, our friends and family, it has overwhelmed us," said Pam Scheible.

Most people use golf as a way to spend a Sunday afternoon, but for Steve...

"You know Arnie Palmer once said, 'You want to know the true character of somebody, play a round of golf with them,'" said Steve Scheible.

It's more than just a game.
