Ware and McNabb go wire to wire for San Angelo Country Club golf title
It was hard for Flynn McNabb to fight back tears Sunday night after winning the San Angelo Country Club Men's Partnership for the first time.
"It means the world," the 2019 San Angelo Central High School graduate said. "I grew up out here a lot and I've just watched guys like John Duke Hudson and Colton Williams win this thing (multiple times).
"My dad got me into this game and he passed away back in November and this is where his career started, so it feels pretty special. I feel like he's out here today right now."
The former San Angelo Central High School standout teamed up with Tyler Ware to shoot 67-65-68-69--269 (15-under par) for a three-shot wire-to-wire victory.
They held off Hudson and Williams (68-68-68-67-68--271), who placed second.
Defending champions A.J. Pursley and Travis Klutts (69-67-70-68--274) finished five shots off the lead and settled for third.
Ware and McNabb were in a four-way tie after Thursday's first round, but they were in sole possession of first from the second round on.
Don't think for a minute that it came easy though.
"We were 1-over I think through three or four holes and we tried battling and then we got a bad break on 8," McNabb said of Sunday's round, their highest score of the week. "We had a fried egg, both of us.
"We ended up being square with John Duke and (Colton) on 9 and I got lucky and made about a 15-footer downhill and after that, the putts just started going in. It was a great week."
The SACC tourney is a grueling test for golfers, especially since it's a four-day event.
"It's a marathon, not a sprint," Ware said. "I think there was a chemistry that we had. There were no apologies. We were just out here trying our best.
"We made some mistakes and you're going to make them, but I think when it came down to it, we did what we had to do when it came down to making the right putts. And we fed off of each other's energy really well."
Trying to hold off guys like Hudson and Williams is like playing with fire.
"We opened the door and that's a scary feeling," Ware said. "We were tied with them and (Flynn's) putt on 9 flipped the script a little bit. My putt on 11 or 18 started that train, and they made birdies as well. They would birdie on top of us all day. That was the hard part.
"We couldn't really get any leeway out of them. Finally, they gave us a little break on 11 and they made a mistake and we kept the foot on the throat a little bit from there. You just have to run out of holes sometimes if you're up. If we played three more holes, it'd probably go the other way."
Hudson and Williams tipped their hats to the new champs.
"They're great guys," Ware said. "I'm looking forward to playing against them again. I won the Bentwood partnership (in 2021) and now I've won this one. Taking both home in my first 10 months in San Angelo is pretty cool."
