Alabama football has the second five-star commit of its 2023 recruiting class — and they're both in-state recruits.

Thompson defensive back Tony Mitchell committed to Alabama on Sunday. The No. 15 recruit in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite, is Alabama's seventh commit of the cycle.

He joins Florence five-star 2023 cornerback Jahlil Hurley in the secondary.

Mitchell, 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, chose Alabama over Auburn, Georgia and Texas A&M. He finished with 55 tackles, two interceptions and 11 pass deflections in 2021, when he helped Thompson win its third straight 7A championship.

Mitchell released his final four schools on Thursday but quickly came to a decision. He didn't know he'd commit just days later.

"I just woke up with that feeling," Mitchell told the Tuscaloosa News. "Just with dead period approaching and the season coming up, just want to be able to lock in with my teammates and get this fourth state championship. Want to be able to focus and not worry where I want to go to college. I just knew it was the right time."

Thompson has been a go-to school for Alabama coach Nick Saban, and Mitchell continues the pipeline. Five-star 2022 edge Jeremiah Alexander signed to Alabama from Thompson in February.

Thompson five-star edge defender Peter Woods announced a final four of Alabama, Clemson, Florida and Jackson State in June. He will announce his decision July 8.

The Alabama high school football 2023 in-state recruiting class is the deepest ever in the recruiting service era and already a big part of Alabama's 2023 class. Four of Alabama's commits are in-state.

There are five fin-state five-stars and 16 four-stars.

Alabama also landed three-star Mississippi State athlete Brayson Hubbard on Sunday.
