JUNE 26, 2022 - A 12-year-old Macon County boy, Barrett McKim, was severely injured during a science experiment Thursday, June 23, sustaining 50% burns to his body after his shirt caught on fire, his father said Sunday. Barrett has been hospitalized and had surgery Friday, with several more surgeries scheduled this week. His mother, Caroline, was also severely burned on her hands as she tried to get his shirt off his body.(Photo courtesy: McKim family)
A 12-year-old boy in Macon County is in the hospital after sustaining burns to 50% of his body.

Kyle McKim, the father of the boy, Barrett, shared with News 13 on Sunday, June 26 that Barrett was working on a science experiment Thursday, June 23 when it exploded, catching his T-shirt on fire.

Barrett's mother, Caroline, attempted to get the shirt off her son, severely burning her hands in the process, McKim said.
Both Barrett and Caroline underwent surgeries on Friday and have additional surgeries scheduled this week.
