Lightning strikes, fallen tree during CNY summer storm lead to more than 6,400 homes without power

Syracuse, N.Y. — More than 6,400 homes and businesses throughout Central New York lost power briefly during a storm Sunday evening, according to National Grid.

Shortly after 5 p.m., heavy rain and thunderstorms swept through the area.

Lightning struck equipment on state Route 38A in Skaneateles, which interrupted service for 1,320 customers at 5 p.m., National Grid spokesman Jared Paventi said.

“Our crews responded after the line of storms passed and were able to restore them all in about 90 minutes,” he said.

Then, at 5:25 p.m. 2,785 customers lost power in the Cicero area when lightning struck a tree, which damaged National Grid infrastructure, Paventi said.

“Our crews responded when it was safe and were able to restore service within about one hour,” he said.

Then, at 5:35 p.m., about 2,300 customers in the Fayetteville area lost power when a tree damaged in the storm fell on National Grid equipment near Green Lakes, Paventi said. National Grid was able to restore power in that area in about 40 minutes.

“Summertime thunderstorms present for our customers and crews, which is why we often wait until conditions are safe before responding,” Paventi said. “We understand the inconvenience for our customers but we were able to assess and repair each of these incidents without a prolonged outage.”

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout the night Sunday and early Monday. The rain is expected to end by about 6 or 7 a.m. Monday, and nicer weather is in store throughout the day Monday, National Weather Service meteorologist Jake Chalupsky said.

The high temperature Monday afternoon is expected to reach 74 degrees. The humidity will also drop throughout the day, Chalupsky said.
