Edward Charles Koenig Jr., 35, of Hillsboro has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for tampering with motor vehicles, drug possession and other offenses, court records show.

Koenig pleaded guilty on April 25 to 10 felonies and a misdemeanor stemming from nine incidents that occurred between October 2019 and July 2021, and Jefferson County Jefferson County Div. 4 Circuit Judge Brenda Stacey handed down the sentence on June 2, according to court documents.

He received 10 years each for two counts of felony first-degree tampering and seven years for felony spitting on a correctional officer. Those sentences will run currently, or at the same time, but consecutively with eight other sentences he received, for a total of 20 years, court records said.

The other sentences, which will run concurrently with each other, include five 10-year sentences for felony possession of a controlled substance; two seven-year sentences for felony driving with a revoked license; and a six-month sentence for misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, court documents show.

Jefferson County assistant prosecuting attorney Courtney Goodwin handled the cases.

One of the sentences for tampering stemmed from an arrest on Oct. 23, 2019, when Koenig stashed a stolen motorcycle behind a home in the 5200 block of Hillsboro Hematite Road in the De Soto area, the probable-cause statement in the case said.

The other tampering sentence is connected to an Aug. 17, 2020, incident when Koenig was found in the 11000 block of Hillsboro Hematite Road in the De Soto area next to a stolen 2008 Honda CBR motorcycle with a screwdriver in it ignition, the report said.

On Aug. 22, 2020, a Jefferson County deputy was called to a home in the 7000 block of Albermarle Court in Barnhart because Koenig was seen stumbling around a car that was still running, and he admitted that he had taken fentanyl before driving it, according to the report.

Less than a month later, on Sept. 14, 2022, a deputy found Koenig with methamphetamine, according to the report.

Early on Nov. 1, 2020, a Crystal City Police officer arrested Koenig, who was walking through the Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 1101 Missouri Ave., and appeared impaired. He was found with a container filled with marijuana and fentanyl, the report said.

On Feb. 3, 2021, a Sheriff’s Office deputy arrested Koenig for driving with a revoked license during a traffic stop on northbound Mapaville-Hematite Road in the Festus area, the probable-cause statement said.

A deputy arrested Koenig again on Feb. 24, when he was found at a home in the 11000 block of Mapaville-Hematite Road west of Festus with syringes and meth, the report said.

On March 13, 2021, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper arrested Koenig when he was found driving a Chevrolet Cobalt with a stolen license plate on Main Street in Imperial. Koenig’s driver’s license was suspended at the time, the probable-cause statement said.

Koenig’s final charge stemmed from a July 4, 2021, incident at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro when he spit on a corrections officer, the probable-cause statement said.
