Former BYU Star, Ex-Jazz Guard Make USA’s World Cup Qualifying Team

SALT LAKE CITY – USA Basketball announced a pair of players with ties to the state of Utah as part of the July 2022 USA Basketball Men’s World Cup Qualifying Team.

The roster was announced by Team USA on Saturday, June 25.

Former BYU men’s basketball standout Eric Mika and ex-Utah Jazz guard David Stockton, son of Jazz legend, John Stockton, were announced as part of USA Basketball’s 12-man roster.

The July 2022 USA Basketball Men’s World Cup Qualifying Team will be coached by former Utah Utes head coach Jim Boylen.

Team USA opened its training camp on June 25 in preparation for upcoming games against Puerto Rico and Cuba.

USA Basketball currently owns a 3-1 record in 2021-23 FIBA World Cup Qualifying contests.

About Eric Mika

Prior to his professional career, Mika played at BYU from 2013-14 and again from 2016-17 after returning from a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In the forward’s freshman season, BYU advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. During his sophomore season, the forward averaged 20.3 points per game and an appearance in the NIT.

Mika averaged 16.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game as a Cougar.

After going undrafted in 2017, Mika has spent time playing in the G-League and overseas. Mika played for the Sacramento Kings in 2020 and has had third different stints with Sacramento’s G-League club, the Stockton Kings.

Mika has played for USA Basketball in recent years.

About David Stockton

Following a standout college career at Gonzaga, Stockton went undrafted in 2014. Since then, the guard has spent time in the NBA, G-League, and with international clubs.

In March 2018, Stockton signed with his Hall of Fame father’s former team, the Jazz. Stockton appeared in three regular season games with Utah.

In addition to his time with the Jazz, Stockton also played in the NBA for the Kings. He’s spent time with multiple G-League franchises, most recently as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies’ affiliate, the Hustle.
