Letters: If you believe in the sanctity of life, support gun control

Letters to the Editor

What disgusting hypocrisy!

Republicans represent themselves as believers in "the sanctity of life," but it seems that is just a ploy to get votes. One cannot be that and fight for proliferation of guns at the same time.

Assault weapons were banned for 10 years; Republicans did not support their continued ban and now an impulsive teenager has bought two guns illegally and destroyed lives. What civilized society needs access to assault weapons?

Doesn't the Constitution say, "a well-regulated militia?" We are so far from that now. Guns should be as regulated at least as well as cars are with training, licensing and tracking.

I don't need to quote the statistics — they are easily available.

If you believe in the sanctity of life, really, then support child care, job education, job training, family education in school, easily available birth control, affordable adoption, responsible behavior, and gun control.

We are a nation weeping for our children.

Jan. 6 hearings

I am very glad that the Jan. 6 hearings are televised so that the truth is revealed. The Jan. 6 insurrection was a violent attempt to overturn government, democracy and the presidential election of 2020. The hearings uncover how close we came to losing our democratic form of government as a result of the insurrection.

I find it appalling that people have lost their lives, experienced harassment and have had to step down from public service employment because of threats and intimidation. Corporate investment and leaders engaged in falsehoods, corruption and overthrowing of democracy need to be held accountable.

Voting is a fundamental right and everyone should have equal opportunity to vote. Integrity is important, accountability and transparency contribute to fair and accessible voting opportunity. Thankfully many government officials did not yield to committing fraud and breaking their oath of office.

I support calling out falsehoods and all efforts to ensure that democracy prevails. Democracy is vital for the empowerment of people, protection of fundamental rights, moral values, peaceful change, civic participation, and social, economic and human development. The insurrection investigation underway is important so justice is not compromised and accountability is paramount.

Taxing

I would like to suggest elimination of the state sales tax on motor fuels rather than an income tax refund. Indiana is one of a handful of states that imposes a state sales tax on motor fuels.

First things first

Before we demolish another building on Elwood Avenue, can the city please clean up the mess from previous demolitions?! It's been there so long a jungle is growing on the heaps of debris.
