Death investigation under way in Petersburg after Saturday night neighborhood shooting

PETERSBURG — One person was killed and another injured in the area's second multiple shooting within 24 hours.

Petersburg Police said a man and woman were found shot around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Savage and Hamilton streets. The man, Keon Lewis, 20, of Richmond, died of his injuries.

No motive or suspect information was released. An investigation is continuing.

It is the ninth homicide reported in Petersburg this year, two more than at this same time in 2021 when the city logged 18 killings.

The murder comes less than a day after four people, including three juveniles, were shot Friday night near Cavalier Square in Hopewell. A teen, 18-year-old Jasir Culver of Petersburg, and one of the juveniles, 14-year-old Micah Coles of Hopewell were found dead on railroad tracks near the intersection of Elm Street and Arlington Road. The two other victims were taken to local hospitals and are expected to survive.

Hopewell has tallied five murders this year.
