Family members receive diplomas of victims of local gun violence

PITTSBURGH — Mathew Steffy-Ross and Marvin Matthews should have accepted their diplomas from Phase 4 Learning Center this weekend. That opportunity was taken away from them when they were shot and killed during separate incidents of gun violence.

The boys’ diplomas were given to their family members in a special tribute during the learning center’s graduation ceremony.

Steffy-Ross was killed during the Easter Sunday Airbnb mass shooting in Pittsburgh.

Matthews was killed in Braddock less than a week ago.

“Mat was a light unto everyone. Kind, give you the shirt off his back. Kind to his friends and foe alike,” said Bonnie McLain, a relative.
