Special waste drop-off sites are now open

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is holding special waste drop-off sites across the five boroughs, where residents can discard certain harmful products.

The Staten Island drop-off site will be located off the Muldoon Avenue exit of the southbound West Shore Expressway, past the DSNY security booth.

The site will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., every Saturday and the last Friday of each month.

Drop-off sites are closed on federal holidays and during severe weather.

Upon arrival at a site, proof of residency such as a valid New York state driver’s license will be required, or a phone and utility bill.

Items that are accepted at the DSNY’s special waste drop-off sites include:

  • Batteries, including automotive, rechargeable, and single-use. At the drop-off site, place each battery into its designated collection container: alkaline, small sealed lead acid, auto, and “other.”
  • Motor oil and transmission fluid (up to 10 quarts per visit)
  • Motor oil filters (up to two filters per visit)
  • Fluorescent light bulbs & CFLs
  • Latex paint (up to five gallons per visit)
  • Mercury-containing devices (up to two per visit)
  • Passenger car tires (up to four per visit)
