The 2022 Athens Music Walk of Fame inductees were announced at AthFest. Here's the list

The number of plaques on the Athens Music Walk of Fame downtown will soon increase to 20 with this year's honorary class. The 2022 inductees were announced during the AthFest Music & Arts Festival on Saturday evening.

Bloodkin, Tituss Burgess, The Glands, Ishues and Love Tractor will join 2021 honorees Bob Cole, Lo Down & Duddy, Nuçi’s Space/Linda Phillips, of Montreal and Art Rosenbaum. Plaques are expected to be installed later this summer.

The inaugural inductees in 2020 were The B-52s, Danger Mouse (Brian Joseph Burton), Drive-By Truckers, The Elephant 6 Recording Company, Hall Johnson, Neal Pattman, Pylon, R.E.M., Vic Chesnutt and Widespread Panic.

'I carried Athens on my back': How Ishues brought Classic City hip-hop to the world stage

Ishues performs at the Caledonia in Athens, Ga., on Feb. 22, 2020. The highly revered local hip-hop artist was inducted into the Athens Music Walk of Fame on Jun. 25, 2022.

"It feels really good to be recognized at the highest level in the city," Ishues told the Banner-Herald. "I made it my focus to make downtown Athens recognize hip-hop and be a place where we could come and perform."

Bloodkin and Love Tractor were part of the 1980s explosion of new-wave rock that brought worldwide attention to the Athens music scene. Singer-songwriter Daniel Hutchens, who co-founded Bloodkin with childhood friend Eric Carter, passed away on May 9, 2021.

Athens-born Burgess was active in the theater program at Cedar Shoals High School and received his bachelor of arts in music from the University of Georgia in 2001. Burgess is a five-time Emmy award nominee for his work on "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."

An Athens-Clarke County crew places the R.E.M. Athens Music Walk of Fame plaque in downtown Athens, Ga, on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020. The Music Walk of Fame honors Athens musicians that have made their mark on the town. The project is funded by the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission and supported by community partnerships, including the Athens Downtown Development Authority and the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Arts Division.

The Glands' influential self-released 1996 album "Double Thriller" and 2000 self-titled follow-up were called "masterpieces" by NPR and have been rereleased on vinyl. Frontman and founding member Ross Shapiro, who also owned Schoolkids Records downtown, passed away in 2016.

Ishues, whose given name is Ismeal Cuthbertson, went from performing at battle of the bands competitions in downtown Athens to touring with legendary rapper KRS-One in the mid-2000s and opening for major-label American acts in Africa. Ishues is one of the most respected MCs in Athens music history.
