Protests in the Upstate's largest city got heated over the weekend. A rally against the overturning of Roe V. Wade was held Saturday afternoon in downtown Greenville.
The Greenville Police Department says the protest was supposed to run from Noon to 1 Pm Saturday and have about 100 people there. Five times as many people were reportedly present and the rally ran over its allotted time. The Police Department says, officers had to separate the opposing sides and on multiple occassions had to address people being in the roadway, and members of the two groups trying to cross to the opposing sides.
Sgt. Jonathan Bragg says, a violator was arrested after multiple warnings, several others interfered and were taken into custody. In total, 6 people were arrested on charges ranging from disorderly conduct, interfering with police and resisting arrest.
The rally was then deemed an unlawful assembly and officers then cleared both sides. The Greenville PD says it did not use pepper spray or tasers while dispersing the crowd. A review of the incident is set to take place, which the PD says is standard protocol in this situation.
