Jon’s Country Burgers celebrates 65th anniversary with deals and prize opportunities.

The drive-in restaurant at 1030 S. Mission Street has been a part of Mt. Pleasant since 1957. It serves burgers, fries, hot dogs and Coney dogs, sandwiches, and shakes among other diner food items. Jon’s Country Burger sees hundred of customers each week.

It is a family business that was started by John Spiris after returning from California where he was stationed in for U.S. Marine Corps. service. When Spiris first saw a drive-in diner, he was blown away by this relatively new food service model and wanted to bring it to his hometown. It became popular among residents and students right away.

Spiris decided to name this restaurant after his two-year-old son, Jon Spiris who took over the burger joint in 19777 and currently runs it today.

“It’s been great,” Jon Spiris said. “When we first started we didn’t know how it was going to go and this is milestone for us. We’ve been fortunate all these years to have community and student support.”

For the 65th anniversary, on June 25, customers could get 65 cent for hotdog, soda and shakes as well as prizes of Jon’s Country Burger t-shirts and glasses with candy inside. 104.3 was also located at Jon’s Country Burgers from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The restaurant also has cruise nights for classic cars that will be going on every Thursday up until Labor Day.
