UPDATE: Woman caught smuggling after 4 county car chase

LYON COUNTY (KSNT) – After making a traffic stop, Lyon County Deputies were involved in a vehicle pursuit and standoff on Saturday.

Deputies were performing a traffic stop at 6:22 a.m. on northbound Interstate 35 when the driver, Rebecca Estrada, 39, of New Mexico, resisted arrest and fled the scene. The pursuit continued through Coffey, Osage, Franklin and Lyon counties.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office deployed spike strips to attempt to end the pursuit but were unsuccessful.

The pursuit ended at the Love’s Truck Stop in Ottawa, but a three-and-a-half-hour stand-off resulted. Estrada intentionally crashed her car into FCSO vehicle, causing minor injuries to the deputy. Estrada eventually exited her vehicle and was armed with a knife. She entered an occupied tractor trailer parked next to her vehicle.

Law enforcement secured the area and they were able to reach the suspect by phone. After lengthy negotiations, the Special Tactics and Rescue Team deployed less lethal munitions into the trailer and forced her out.

Based on initial investigation, FCSO said Estrada was actively smuggling several citizens from countries south of the United States border to various states east of Kansas.

Once the stand-off ended, the Ottawa Police Department and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office took Estrada into custody.

The following charges are pending through Franklin County:
