Trevor van Riemsdyk had a bigger role last season and could get some bigger minutes next season with the Washington Capitals. He played in 72 games last season scoring one goal and 16 assists for 17 points while averaging 17:28 minutes of ice time.

TvR also had a goal and an assist in the playoffs. He had a plus minus of plus three and a plus minus of negative three in the regular season. He also had 129 blocks in the regular season along with 25 hits. In the playoffs he had 13 blocks and eight hits.

TvR’s 129 blocked shots were a team high and he averaged 6.15 blocks per 60 minutes. His 17 points was a career high and he excelled on the third pair but can move up and get top pairing minutes. He could very well be top four or two next season.

He also had more takeaways with 30 than giveaways with 19 and was the only Caps defenseman that had more takeaways than giveaways. He also led all Caps defensemen in penalties drawn per 60 minutes with 0.86.

He also was huge on the Caps penalty kill, leading the team in an average of 2:39 minutes of penally kill ice time. 25 of his shot blocks came from the penalty kill and he was never afraid to dive or use his body.

His minus three was the one bad part about his season. It is tied with Michal Kempny for the second worst among the eight Caps defensemen who played in at least 15 games. He also was one of three defensemen to average a less than 50 Goals For percentage, coming in at 47.73 percent.

TvR had a 49.44 percent Corsi For percentage, a 51.20 percent Expected Goals For percentage, and a 49.86 percent High Danger Chances For percentage in the regular season, per Natural Stat Trick.

His advanced stats dropped in the playoffs with a 44.62 percent Corsi For percentage, a 51.92 percent Expected Goals For percentage, and a 50 percent High Danger Chances For percentage.

Grade B: TvR had an above average season and was effective on the penalty kill. He should get a bigger role next season on the defense.
