GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- An 18-year-old accused of killing his father, then firing a rifle during a struggle with police, will receive a competency evaluation.
An attorney for Htet Tun requested the evaluation Friday, June 24 in during a hearing in 63rd District Court.
Tun was arrested April 28 as police were conducting a death investigation at his family’s home on Sunbrook Drive SE in Gaines Township.
Earlier, a neighbor called police to do a welfare check at the house and deputies and found Tun’s father, 49-year-old Aung Tun, dead in the basement from gunshot wounds.
Htet Tun drove up to the house in a car as police were investigating. Deputies opened the driver’s side door and noticed he had a rifle.
A struggle then ensued and Tun managed to pull the trigger. A deputy was injured with a burn from the muzzle blast but no one was struck by a bullet.
